Roadkill

Friday morning while driving BigBlue to work, I came upon a large gray squirrel bounding down the center line of the road. (BigBlue is my OPEC-friendly Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD 4×4 3/4-ton with the 8.1L V-8 pickup truck) The squirrel looked like it was doing football player agility exercises. The one where they dance down a line of offset tires. Mr Gray Squirrel was hopping back and forth down the center line, unable to decide which direction best led to safety. BigBlue & I were bearing down.

Decision making is like that. Two or more critical paths that each leads to safety between the fine center line of risks and rewards. I am there right now with medical insurance renewal. Three critical paths each with positive outcomes probable.

1. Simple renewal with no changes.
2. Minor plan options changes with the possibility of better long term outcome for the employees.
3. A new direction with a history of proven performance. (Insert stock market disclaimer here – past performance is not a predictor of future outcomes.)

All three paths are good decisions heading into the unknown future. I run down the center line, doing my own mental agility exercise. And the deadline is bearing down.

BigBlue is bearing down on the squirrel. It disappears from sight below the hood. I brace with a grimace waiting for the sickening thud and crunch that never happens. Breathing again, I glance into the rearview mirrors. The squirrel has disappeared safely into the woods.

No roadkill today. At the last and final moment, the squirrel survived by making a best decision.

Will I?
