HitchHikers Guide to HR Rules 2 through 11.

Rule #1 is always Don’t Panic and was elaborated on in a previous post. These rules are presented in the order of their mental appearance as captured on my PDA.

2. Trust no one. Seriously, people are only going to tell what they want you to hear, not necessarily what you need to hear.

3. Lunch time is sacred. Give your mind a break and your body a burst of healthy nourishment. (a diet coke with a snickers bar ain’t lunch)

4. Leave things better than you found them. Don’t trash or thrash the place. All that becomes is fuel for the bridge you may be burning.

5. Finish one thing before starting the next. Nothing weakens a reputation more than a string of unfulfulled good intentions.

6. Do nothing wrong. Learning opportunities are not wrong. Mistake repetition is not a good idea.

7. Do no evil. Evil done today, yesterday or anyday will haunt you in ways yet to be discovered.

8. Work like someone is watching you, everyone is. Of course they are, so be one of them and watch yourself.

9. Mental agility trumps multi-tasking. Focus on the task that presents itself. When an employee walks in the door, they get your full attention. Multi-tasking is truly screwing up multiple things simultaneously.

10. Stop asking for permission to do your job. You were hired to do it, right? Find the boundaries, stretch as needed, and don’t tip the sacred cows.

11. Practice HR activism. Be edgy sometimes and frequently.
